En français plus bas. 😉
Warning: This is a little rant. Just need to get it off my chest to enjoy the rest of the trip.
As you may know, I’m currently in transit between Quebec and Melbourne, where I’m moving to for my new job. When I received the ticket reservation for that flight, I thought that the connection time in Newark was a little short: 1h30 to go through immigration, grab my luggage, customs, drop the luggage, security and get to the gate. I shared my worries with the travel agent and she said: “Don’t worry. You go through customs in LA, not Newark, and you’re leaving from the same terminal only a couple of gates over. You have PLENTY of time.”
So I told myself, “Who am I to argue with the American travel agent booking flights on United Airlines?” and greenlit the tickets for purchase.
Well, guess who was right!
I got to Newark late because my flight was delayed. Then –surprise!– I went through immigration, baggage claim, customs, baggage drop… I was very lucky and hardly waited at each station. Still, when I got to security, my connecting flight was halfway through boarding. Brilliant!
I was in the same terminal, but I had to run almost the full length of it.
Honestly, even if my plane hadn’t been 30 minutes late, the layover didn’t allow me much wait time. Or a toilet break. Or to grab lunch.
And to top the “I so should have had this ticket changed” feeling, they checked in my carry-on because I was late at the gate. You know, the bag with the essential clothes, fragile mementos and precious computer pieces. The bag filled with the stuff that I really wanted to carefully handle throughout transport. Well, it’s in the hold now until Melbourne, and I’m left hoping for the best.
Oh! And in LA, my connecting flight is two gates down from where I arrived. I don’t need to go through anything and I have 5 hours and a half to wait.
Well, thanks whoever’s reading this. I feel much better now that I’ve released this frustration and can undertake the second half of my 30h trip.

Tu as EN MASSE de temps.”

Never fly international through Newark. For some reason, the airlines let you book tight connections, the arrivals always seem to land late, and getting through customs and immigration there is stressful.
