Hey everyone,
I’m still late in the reading and commenting of the various stories. The good news is that my amount of lateness has diminished: I’m missing only Memory and Name. To my defense, I worked overtime last week and slept most of the weekend away. This week should see all come back to normal.
Here is how the drabble challenge works!
- Read the prompt and find your angle.
- Write a drabble (100 words story, give or take five words).
- Post a direct link to your drabble in the comments (or, if you don’t have a blog, just go ahead and post your drabble in the comments).
- In the post on your blog, make sure to link back to this post.
Today’s theme is: Race!
Here is my ‘Name’ story that didn’t get posted last Friday because of my week. My story for Race will probably just appear next Monday but, hopefully, I’ll post the next drabble the same day and be all up to date by then. 😉
Name
Hardly anything ever weighed so much as that name. Yelled in public, it drew tears and sometimes blood. Murmured between a pillow and a moan, it wetted some of the most proper ladies. They would never admit it, of course. Neither would the men who rose to the idea the name suggested.
To those like me who endorsed it more or less willingly, that name meant basic amenities; a little money for food and a roof. Independence too, perhaps. Yet its leaden weight across our shoulders pulled us restlessly toward the bottom of the canal, smothered our every breath.
Whore.

Unfortunate, but true.

Indeed. I actually wrote a whole series of songs on that very subject. *laughs*

Thank you!

Intense, which fits the topic well, and leaving the reveal until the very last word: nicely done!

Hello Elmi and welcome to my blog,
I saw that you participated in last week’s drabble; I’ll make sure to read it as soon as I can.
Thanks for joining the motley crew of drabblers and I’m glad you enjoyed my story!
April 4th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
“motley crew”?? I’m not sure how to take that. ;o) I suppose writing about pirates and courtesans as you do can do that to a writer so I understand. I do like your Drabble!

We’re an eclectic crew of amazing people. Sometimes a bit crazy, but in the end, an awesome bunch from all around the world. Happy now? 😛
I’m glad you liked the drabble. 😉
April 5th, 2011 at 8:01 pm
…..”Sometimes a bit crazy”!? Aw, don’t be so hard on yourself. 😉

You’re nicer than I gave you credit for! 😉

Just noticed that in three of my Drabble’s (Ghost, Bottle and Race) there is a character called Carter.
No idea why…

I really liked the nuances of your drabble for name very powerful which is why I am almost ashamed to put this weak offering up here for Race it is cribbed straight from my life which may be it’s only merit, haha, so I apologise in advance.
Race
We walk upon the same cracked pavement on the same crowded street. We walk bathed by the same icy dispirited Glasgow rain and we walk with the same anxieties both hearts beating raucously in our chests both hands drip with nervous sweat for being there of being in the moment and for being together in the moment separated only by language one of us Scottish the other Greek one of us can speak Greek but both of us can barely speak English our conversation stilted in words but we say more with darting eyes than lips could truly ever murmur.

Your drabble definitely conveys the complexity and at the same time the similarity between people of different backgrounds, Andrew. The stream of consciousness works well, too, here.

Thanks Ryan it’s always exciting to get good feedback for something that was personal in subject like this drabble was.

Don’t exactly know why I came up with this particular angle. Um, maybe… nah, can’t be that! Well, it could be, but… Anyway, the link to my Drabble is…

I had so much fun last time that I’m participating again! I had a tough time deciding my angle though, which is why I’m a bit late to the party ;). Here it is:
