November was really busy for some of us folks of the Absolute Write Water Cooler forums. So we decided to opt for drabbles as last blog chain’s theme.
December is busy from everyone so what do we do? We go even shorter!
The idea is to write hint fiction (25 words or less) or mini-saga (50 words or less). No theme, just the dreadful word count. Yikes!
If you know me even a little bit, you know I write/talk a lot. But I’m a masochist so I opted for hint fiction.
I remember seeing somewhere on the forums that poetry was acceptable. My brain spurted out something and I went “what just happened?” Then, I realised there was a hint of character, a touch of world building, a conflict and a sad ending. I liked it. But – oh drama! oh world unfair! – it’s 26 words long! I tried to cut it down but it screwed the rhythm, the rhymes, the charm or all aforementioned answers. So I am breaking the rules because this story just won’t be told any other way. 😉
I wish to see
I wish to say
A thousand things at least
But seems to me
There is no way
To tame the liar beast
And because I’m a masochist, here’s another one that respects the rules. Yay for the 22 words! But now I wonder if it’s too obscure. I have this rhythm problem again. Anyhoo… *laughs*
I met her. She grew young. I scared her. She grew strong. I joined her. She cuffed me.
Time-travel is a bitch.

Nicely done and we’ll spot you that extra word. You averaged 24. LOL And the second one was not obscure for me once I read the last line that explained it all.
December 12th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Cool!
The last line worked perfectly then. I was hoping it wouldn’t make sense only for me. *laughs*
December 10th, 2010 at 11:32 am
Ooh, poetry… I never thought of that. Brilliant!
December 12th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Poems can say a lot in a few words. 😉
Thanks!
December 10th, 2010 at 1:30 pm
Love the last one!
December 12th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Yay!
December 10th, 2010 at 4:21 pm
Nice twist with the time travel part.
December 12th, 2010 at 2:34 pm
Thank you!
December 10th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
I won’t tell on you for the extra word, and the second effort was well done. Wondering if there’s another way to reveal timetravel, though — it jarred me the way it’s phrased.
Good work!
December 12th, 2010 at 2:36 pm
The time travel line jarred me too. I wondered if I should change it. Then I realized it did what I wanted it to do: convey the character’s jarring, harsh revelation. His mistakes hurt him and so their presentation should “hurt” us.
But may be it just makes sense for me to do it like that. *laughs*

Very clever, Aheila. It just goes to show you how strong a story can be in such few words. And you accomplished just that.
December 12th, 2010 at 2:37 pm
Thank you! The challenge seemed overwhelming at first but I’m glad I forced myself to do it. 😉
December 10th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
“To tame the liar beast” – I love it! I believe “liar” is wildcard word, and should never count against you.
December 12th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
*laughs* I like that wildcard idea. And I’m glad you loved that line. I don’t know if it’s the same for you but the “liar beast” has creature horror movie potential for me. 😉

December 11th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Well done! And you opted for 2? That’s torturous!! 😉
December 12th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
Just another way for me to prove I’m a bit insane. 😉
December 11th, 2010 at 8:20 pm
Another overachiever writing two 🙂 And I agree about the poem; at 25 words, the rhyme scheme just doesn’t work as delightfully.
December 12th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Overachieving is definitely one of my problems. *laughs*
December 12th, 2010 at 11:58 am
Nice job!
Nice twist with the poetry.
Now that you’ve done it, I wonder why nobody else has? Why are there no Haiku?
December 12th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Thanks!
Haikus are definitely challenging. Maybe that’s why there aren’t any… yet!
December 14th, 2010 at 12:57 am
I enjoyed both, the last line about time travel on the second one summed it all up.
I enjoyed the first one too, doubt I would have spotted the 26th word if you hadn’t told me. lol 🙂
December 14th, 2010 at 6:34 am
I’m glad you enjoyed them. And yes spotting one odd word requires counting. *laughs*
December 15th, 2010 at 1:23 am
Very cool! 🙂 I liked both. 🙂
