Hello everyone and welcome to fellow Weekend Writing Warriors!
Some of you readers may have heard about this or read one of the rare snippets I shared in the past. Basically, a bunch of writers share 8 sentences of their work every Sunday, and since I’m writing a lot these days, I figured I’d jump back on that train.
Today’s snippet is from The Phoenix’s Wake, an urban fantasy ‘buddy cop’ mystery I’ve talked about a few times before. I’m trying to finish the first draft by the end of September which sets my word count goal at 14k a week without counting the blog. Lots of work ahead!
Today’s snippet comes an hour after Gael (Gorgon detective and narrator) had to stun Keith, her brand new human partner, to stop him from unnecessarily shooting on a harpy. Since then, Keith made yet another mistake in his interaction with myths and Gael sat him down for a major scolding.
“Third, sticking your foot down your throat like you’ve been doing all day is one thing. But if you had significantly harmed Mr Lambros out of fear and not necessity, you would have been dead within the week.”
Keith scuffed. “I can defend myself and I’m part of the police force.”
“And your problem is that you think that’s protection.” I put my elbows on the table and closed the space between us to give a bit more weight to the threat. “We’ve policed ourselves for centuries without you even being aware of our existence, and now, your laws force us to show you how to do it. Don’t give my people reasons to see you as the problem instead of a mere symptom because they will erase you if they think they’ll be better off.”
Hope you enjoyed these 8 sentences (first draft, creative punctuation and all). Please read and give a shout to other WeWriWa!
