Sprout – A Drabble

Halley walked a few paces ahead of Jake, so she saw the break in the desert’s sands first. “What’s that?”
“Green thingy on our path?”
Halley frowned. “I wonder how it got there?”
“If we can eat it, why care?”
“Enough with the rhyming!” Halley barked.
“Doesn’t seem nourishing.” Jake shrugged and reached for the sprout.
“Stop! Are you nuts?” Halley covered Jake’s mouth with her hand to keep it shut. “Remember grandpa’s stories? These grow into fruits and veggies. We should wait.” Halley released Jake.
Halley nodded and sat in the barren land, waiting. Jake did the same.

This is a drabble for Monday’s prompt.
