Yes, it is Tuesday again. And at least for this month, Tuesday means Drabble Day!

Now that the rules are taken care of, and in case you haven’t guessed it by the title of this post, today’s drabble prompt is : Fruits!
And here is my drabble!
Fruits
A hand in my paper bag, I pushed aside the sandwich. Mom asked me every morning which sandwich I wanted but the snack was a surprise. I wrapped my hand around a plastic bag. Probably a fruit. It was Wednesday; sugar was only allowed on Friday.
I pulled out a handful of raisins. My favorites.
“Those are mine!” Kurt yelled.
“No, they’re not!”
He grabbed the bag and ran. No fair! Tears filled my eyes. He did that every week.
“Don’t cry, Evelyn.” Charles sat on the grass by my side. “Here! Have some of my cherries.”
Everything got better.

Daven had stared in complete amazement at how high the total bill for our weekly groceries had become. He double checked the bill, and then afterwards handed it to me, saying something must have gone wrong. I disagreed.
Already behind in the back of the small cup board under our bar top which separated our living room and kitchen, I had already stashed away my sinful addiction: mangoes. I had sneaked in a few when he wasn’t looking at the shopping cart, and surreptitiously fielded the bag they were in and took the receipt. For a small fruit, it was expensive.

This was quite literally what I wrote in a draft for my NaNovel, and then I trashed it.

To me, it felt weird putting it in the narrative. It looked fantastic on it’s own, and in the outline, but once it measured up to the current narrative, sighs.
Let’s see if I can reinsert it sometime during editing month in December.

I liked that! Nice angle, nice outcome. You said a lot about human nature in so few words. Nicely written and fun to read. This is a great exercise, Aheila. It forces an economy of words which makes the challenge fun and, well, challenging, lol. I’ll try to post one later. 😀
