Contrary to my habits, I’m ending the Absolute Write Water Cooler forum’s blog chain this month. AuburnAssassin has been nice enough to host it this month while I rushed to finish my novel and free up my schedule for NaNoWriMo.
The theme for this month’s blog chain is: Masquerade. Now what can I possibly write with that theme? *wide grinning mask*
They say mirrors don’t lie. I always thought that was funny; at the very least, they’re incredible accessories to some of the worst cover-ups. Aren’t accessories to murder convicted as well as the red-handed felon?
By looking at our reflection, we convince ourselves of nonsense. We’re too ugly or fat. Our hair is wrong. Our skin, boring. We practice the poker face we need for speeches and flirt. We apply tons of make-up until everyone forgets there was ever a face under it.
Aren’t we killing ourselves?
As I dab liquids and powders on my skin, I wonder, for the umpteenth time, if my life would be easier without mirrors. Maybe, if they weren’t staring right back at me, I wouldn’t feel the urge to hide black eyes, bruises and scars.
And then the whole world could see what he’s doing to me.
But here is the mirror, fuelling my lies, as I layer enough foundation to hide the pain without cracking when I smile.
I hope you enjoyed this flash fiction and be sure to check out the other participants:

Very sad, but also very true….

I was kind of surprised when I finished this. Unexpected, to say the least.

We see what we want to see in the mirror. Not the mirrors fault. But in a way, it reflects our true nature even if at an odd angle, because what we chose to mask can say more about who we are than what we chose to show or see.

Very true.
I guess blaming inanimate objects also tells a lot about a person.

Heartbreaking flash but too true for too many. Well done.

Thank you.
Sometimes short bursts of creativity are all we need to reveal insights.

I’m afraid so…
October 18th, 2010 at 3:06 pm
Artfully done!
Unfortunately, the answer is no…in a world without mirrors, everyone would look into bowls of water instead 🙂

You dream slayer! 😉

I love the double entendre of “cover up” here. This was a short, sourly-surprising post. Very nicely done.
October 19th, 2010 at 4:55 am
Thank you!
I wrote it and had a “huh? Just that long?” moment. Then I realized it’s all the length it needed.
October 19th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Sad but well done!
