Before I started the Drabble Day Challenge last Tuesday, I had actually suggested drabbles on the Absolute Write Water Cooler forums for the November blog chain. Since a bunch of us are NaNoing but wanted to do the blog chain, drabbles are perfect.
So now my turn has come to post for a blog chain. If you are an AWers, you can join the chain on the forums. Whether you’re an AWer or not, you can participate to this special edition of the Drabble Day by either posting your drabble in the comment or posting a link to your drabble.
The one word prompt for today’s hundred word story is: Beach!
Beach
The horizon formed an unbroken line in shades of blue. The color radiated with hot overlays where the setting sun spread its rays. Before that distant line, blue deepened, truer to the distance of the bed beneath it. When a wave rode high enough, the sun shone through, making the water turquoise. Almost green.
The ensemble described perfection in a way words or images could never capture. Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to appreciate it as behind the beauty slumbered a menace I tasted every minute.
Another wave washed over me. Hanging to my plank, I prayed for the beach.

I really like the images you’ve created here, the beauty on the surface which we see and the hidden danger lurking beneath or behind that beauty. And the alliterative aspect of some of the phrases gives it a nice rhythmic feel.

Thanks Ryan. I didn’t even notice the alliteration bits. *laughs* I’ll have to pat my unconcious in the back.

Nicely done. At first I wondered how you were going to create a story after using so many words to describe the beauty of the sea but that’s what ultimately made your ending, in a mere three sentences, so powerful.

Thanks Claire!
I’m usually an action-oriented writer so this exercise allowed me to try something else.

I posted one on my blog.

It’s under the title Beach, lol.

I’m heading over to read it right now. Thanks for participating!

Wow! Your prose is so eloquent. You squeezed a whole lot of meaning and beauty into so few words. Nice!
November 7th, 2010 at 9:13 am
Thank you! I’m always anxious when it comes to descriptions.

I aggre with Ryan. I like the imagery also.

Hello Rob G and welcome to my blog!
Thanks for the kind comment!

That’s what I love about drabbles: they force either an economy of words or an economy of action. Taking the time to lovingly describe the scene and then turning it on its head with just three sentences…terrific.
November 7th, 2010 at 9:15 am
Thanks!
I find drabbles to be an interesting challenge too. Especially since I have a tendency to write too much. *laughs*

Oh, ho, ho…what a twist. Like Claire, I wondered how you were going to fit a “happening” in there, but you did it beautifully.
November 7th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Thanks!
I might be a plot twist fanatic. I love to screw things up. *laughs*

Hi Aheïla, great writing as always my friend, I just got around to posting my attempt for the career drabble on my blog I would have posted it earlier but I had “one of those weeks“, lol. Hope you enjoy it it’s a bit dark all my writing has been of late guess the reason is pretty obvious anyway enough doom and gloom just wanted to say I thought this drabble was great and I loved the ending in particular very unexpected and very sudden.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:43 am
Hey Andrew,
Thanks for the compliment! Don’t forget to post a direct link to your career drabble in a comment on the Drabble Day – Career post!
Some weeks are bound to be tougher than others. The important thing is to pull through. If you can draw from the negative to write something beautiful, all the better!

Just great! I loved it!

“Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to appreciate it as behind the beauty slumbered a menace I tasted every minute.” Oooh, I wonder what this menace is. Wonderfully crafted story here, Aheila. Beautiful description.
November 13th, 2010 at 7:42 pm
For me, the menace is just the classical problems of being shipwrecked in the middle of the ocean. But I find it a bit boring. Your mystery sounds a lot cooler. *laughs*
